I said I'd choose only one Hitchcock entry, but here I am choosing a second one. If you're missing Camille's journey of peeling back the layers of shocking family revelations, this may be the right picture for you. The film really digs deep into the protagonist Charlie's emotions as she struggles with the idea that a beloved family member could be capable of such tremendous evil. Shadow of a Doubt follows Charlotte 'Charlie' Newton as she increasingly suspects that her beloved uncle Charlie Oakley is a serial killer. I could load this list with Hitchcock classics, but that wouldn't entirely be fair, so I'm choosing just one. Shadow of a Doubt (dir: Alfred Hitchcock, 1943) Despite the film's age, it's pacing, camera work, and influential use of sound make M feel thoroughly modern, and the parallel investigations between cops and criminals set it apart from the subsequent films it inspired. The corresponding investigation cracks down so hard on the criminal underworld that the criminal underworld launches their own investigation to put a stop to the killings.
The first sound film from German director Fritz Lang, M is set in a community plagued by a mysterious child serial killer (like Sharp Objects). If you're looking to get into the roots of serial killer cinema with a touch of the mysterious, look no further. The visuals are fantastic and iconic, and the method of murder is truly disturbing.
